Doula Network & Training

What is a Doula?

Doulas are compassionate professionals who offer emotional, physical, and informational support to families before, during, and after childbirth. They are not medical professionals but work alongside your healthcare team to ensure you feel empowered, informed, and cared for every step of the way. At About Families, we believe every family deserves the support of a doula, because healthy families create healthy communities.

Birth Doulas

Your birth doula will meet with you prenatally (during pregnancy) to help you answer questions, work on comfort measures during pregnancy, prepare a birth plan and even attend medical visits with you. Your birth doula will also be by your side throughout labor and delivery, providing:

  • Comfort measures like breathing techniques, relaxation strategies, massage, and positioning to ease labor pain.
  • Continuous support, advocacy, and encouragement, regardless of the setting (hospital, birth center, or home).
  • Guidance to help partners feel involved and confident in supporting you.

Studies show that having a birth doula can reduce the need for medical interventions, decrease labor time, and improve overall birth satisfaction.

Postpartum Doulas

After your baby arrives, our postpartum doulas help you transition into parenthood with:

  • Practical assistance, including breastfeeding support and infant care education.
  • Emotional support to ease the challenges of postpartum recovery.
  • Help with household tasks so you can rest and bond with your baby.

Postpartum doulas provide reassurance and guidance during this critical time, promoting confidence and reducing stress for new parents.
